Learning about music with other youngsters at a fun-filled summer camp is set to give budding young musicians a whole new experience.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Music Office is now inviting applications for the 2011 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp. A popular annual programme, the camp offers young musicians an opportunity to receive training from renowned overseas and Mainland musicians in the company of fellow trainee musicians in a scenic environment.
The 2011 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp will be held from July 24 to 30 (Camp A) and July 31 to August 6 (Camp B) at the Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre. Qualified local young musicians aged 10 to 25 are welcome to apply. The fee is $990 per person for a seven-day, six-night music camp.
Overseas and Mainland young musicians are also welcome to join the Youth Music Camp, including an extra day for cultural exchange with local musicians. The camps will be held from July 24 to 31 (Camp A) and July 31 to August 7 (Camp B). The fee for overseas and Mainland campers is $1,520 per person for an eight-day, seven-night music camp.
Young musicians may choose any of the following groups: Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band or Junior Chinese Orchestra in Camp A; and Chinese Orchestra, Youth Choir or Junior String Orchestra in Camp B.
A day camp at $53 per person per day is also available from July 25 to 29 and from August 1 to 5 for organisations, families and any other combinations of individuals to share delightful musical activities such as visits to orchestra, band and choir rehearsals, mini concerts, musical games and various kinds of recreation facilities also available in the camp.
Renowned musicians participating in this year's training programme include Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Arlington and Conductor of the Houston Youth Symphony (USA), Dr Clifton Evans; Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble and faculty member in conducting at the College of Mount St Joseph, Cincinnati (USA), Mr Simon Tillier; Associate Professor of the Chinese Music Department of Tainan National University of Arts (Taiwan) and former Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Dr Ku Pao Wen; Associate Conductor of Taipei Chinese Orchestra and Conductor of the orchestra's Senior Youth Orchestra, Mr Lee Ying; Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at St Mary's College, Indiana, and Music Director of the South Bend Chamber Singers (USA), Dr Nancy Menk; and National Class One Performer and founder of the Shenzhen Youth Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Mr Wang Jiayang.
Campers will take part in an intensive orchestral, band or choral training programme conducted by different musicians to enhance their musical skills, as well as enjoy various recreational activities at the campsite.
Two concerts will be held on July 31 and August 7 at the conclusion of each camp to show the campers' achievements.
