TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
 
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
 
THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.
 
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.
 
AT 9 P.M., SUPER TYPHOON YAGI WAS CENTRED ABOUT 330
KILOMETRES SOUTH OF HONG KONG (NEAR 19.3 DEGREES NORTH
114.1 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST-NORTHWEST
AT ABOUT 15 KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE NORTHERN PART OF
THE SOUTH CHINA SEA, MOVING IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE
VICINITY OF LEIZHOU PENINSULA TO HAINAN ISLAND.


 
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST, SUPER TYPHOON YAGI WILL
BE CLOSEST TO HONG KONG TOMORROW MORNING, SKIRTING AROUND
300 KILOMETRES TO THE SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG. GALE WINDS
ASSOCIATED WITH YAGI ARE EXPECTED TO AFFECT THE VICINITY OF
THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY. THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL, NO.8 IS
EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN FORCE AT LEAST UNTIL NOON TOMORROW.
 
THE INTENSE RAINBANDS ASSOCIATED WITH YAGI ARE GRADUALLY
AFFECTING THE TERRITORY. THERE WILL BE HEAVY SQUALLY
SHOWERS TOMORROW. SEAS WILL BE VERY ROUGH WITH SWELLS.
MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE
AND NOT ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.


 
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
WAGLAN ISLAND, TATE'S CAIRN AND CHEUNG CHAU BEACH WERE 83,
80 AND 75 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING
92, 115 AND 99 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.

1. COMPLETE ALL PRECAUTIONS IN YOUR HOME. LOCK ALL WINDOWS
AND DOORS, INSERT REINFORCED SHUTTERS AND GATES IF THEY ARE
AVAILABLE. ADHESIVE TAPE FIXED TO LARGE WINDOW-PANES IN
EXPOSED POSITIONS WILL REDUCE DAMAGE AND INJURY BY BROKEN
GLASS. DRAINS SHOULD BE CLEARED OF LEAVES AND RUBBISH AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE.
 
2. DO NOT STAND NEAR WINDOWS ON THE EXPOSED SIDE OF YOUR
HOME. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAFE PLACE TO SHELTER, SHOULD
WINDOWS BE BROKEN.
 
3. OWING TO STORM SURGE, SOME LOW-LYING AREAS MAY HAVE
SERIOUS FLOODING OR BACKFLOW OF SEAWATER. YOU SHOULD AVOID
GOING TO LIKELY AFFECTED LOW-LYING AREAS AND STAY AWAY FROM
DANGEROUS PLACES.
 
4. SEAS ARE VERY ROUGH, AND THERE ARE SWELLS. YOU ARE
ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND LOW-LYING
AREAS, AND NOT TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.
 
5. OWNERS OF NEON SIGNS SHOULD SWITCH OFF THE ELECTRICITY
SUPPLY TO THE SIGNS.
