TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT 9 P.M., SEVERE TROPICAL STORM YAGI WAS ESTIMATED TO BE
ABOUT 600 KILOMETRES SOUTHEAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 18.8
DEGREES NORTH 118.6 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE
WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 10 KILOMETRES PER HOUR ACROSS THE
NORTHERN PART OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA AND INTENSIFY
GRADUALLY.

ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK, YAGI WILL STILL
MAINTAIN A DISTANCE OF MORE THAN 400 KILOMETRES FROM HONG
KONG TONIGHT AND TOMORROW MORNING. ITS STRONG WINDS ARE NOT
YET AFFECTING THE VICINITY OF PEARL RIVER ESTUARY. THE
STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 WILL REMAIN IN FORCE UNTIL AT LEAST
NOON TOMORROW.
AS YAGI GRADUALLY EDGES CLOSER TO THE COAST OF SOUTHERN
CHINA, WINDS OVER THE REGION WILL STRENGTHEN. THE
OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER ISSUING THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL,
NO. 3 LATER TOMORROW. DEPENDING ON THE SUBSEQUENT RATE OF
INTENSIFICATION OF YAGI AND THE DISTANCE OF ITS ASSOCIATED
GALE WINDS FROM THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY, THE OBSERVATORY
WILL ASSESS THE NEED OF ISSUING HIGHER TROPICAL CYCLONE
WARNING SIGNALS. THERE WILL BE SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE
PUBLIC SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND NOT ENGAGE
IN WATER SPORTS.
