Government reserves Queensway Government Offices site for expansion of High Court
*********************************************************************************
A Government spokesperson announced today (January 22) that the Development Bureau and the Judiciary have reached a consensus and will reserve the Queensway Government Offices site (adjacent to the existing High Court Building) for the construction of a new High Court Complex.

The spokesperson said that the Chief Executive has always attached great importance to the work of the Judiciary and relevant government bureaux and departments will provide sufficient resources to ensure the effective operation of the Judiciary, including resources for improving court facilities. In this regard, the Government will reserve the existing Queensway Government Offices site for the construction of the new High Court Complex. The Judiciary will keep the existing site of the High Court Building, which will be redeveloped as part of the new High Court Complex.

The spokesperson said that in line with the Government's earlier recommendation, existing government offices in the Queensway Government Offices would be gradually relocated to the Northern Metropolis and other locations. The Judiciary considers a joint development of the vacated site and the adjacent existing High Court Building desirable, as the larger development scale will allow more flexibility in design and contribute to the efficiency of court operations. This arrangement will also enhance the effectiveness of the land use of the site.

Relevant government bureaux and departments will liaise with the Judiciary to take forward the preparatory work for the new High Court Complex. The Development Bureau will separately review the specific use of Site 5 of the new Central Harbourfront (currently zoned "Government, Institution or Community") originally earmarked for the relocation of the High Court Building.
