SB condemns article in Ming Pao taking crime prevention message out of context
******************************************************************************
ýÿIn a commentary written by Mr Lo Kin-hei in Ming Pao today (July 13), the writer has taken out of context remarks by the Secretary for Security, Mr Tang Ping-keung, at the Legislative Council meeting last week regarding the handling of violent crimes, thereby confusing and misleading readers that a certain group of people was being discriminated against. The Security Bureau (SB) condemns this commentary.

A spokesman for the SB said, "While replying to a question raised at the Legislative Council that day, Mr Tang appealed to members of the public that they should notify the Police as soon as possible and 'Spot and Report' when they foresee or suspect any occurrence of crimes. Mr Tang, as the Secretary for Security, has a responsibility to remind the public to pay attention to public safety. However, the writer has taken a well-intentioned reminder out of context, distorting it as prejudice and discrimination against the mentally ill. We are 'extremely shocked' by the twisted representation of a positive crime prevention message by the writer."

The writer disregarded public safety and smeared the well-intentioned reminder on "Spot and Report". The spokesman expressed condemnation again and reiterated that the SB appeals to society to attach great importance to mental health. The Government has also proposed 10 enhanced measures to support persons in mental recovery or with mental health needs. Law enforcement agencies will continue to strive to maintain public order and combat crimes with the support of the community in order to protect the lives and property of citizens.
