Two Old and Valuable Trees in Central removed
*********************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) last night (April 29) removed two Old and Valuable Trees (OVTs) on Upper Albert Road, Central, in order to ensure public safety and control the spread of brown root rot (BRR) disease. The trees were infected with BRR disease and posed a risk of collapse.

The trees being removed were Chinese Banyan (Ficus microcarpa) listed on the Register of OVTs with a height of 22 metres (registration number LCSD CW/77) and 10m (registration number LCSD CW/78) respectively. The trees were confirmed to have BRR infections in September 2020 and February 2019 respectively by the Tree Management Office of the Development Bureau.

The LCSD had all along carried out regular inspections and maintenance of the trees, including crown reduction, cabling and application of fungicide. However, the health and structural condition of the trees deteriorated. Decreased foliage density and obvious signs of advanced wood decay at the roots and trunk base were found, indicating a serious infection with BRR disease and risks of the trees' collapse.

Upon consultation with the Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau, Urban Forestry Advisory Panel, and Central and Western District Council on removal of the trees, the LCSD removed the trees last night accordingly. The LCSD will replant two Callery Pears at a nearby roundabout along Garden Road.

A spokesman for the LCSD reiterated that the department will continue to adopt a prudent approach in inspecting and managing trees under its care. Removal of problematic trees will be undertaken only when no other viable risk mitigation measure is available.
