The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Opening Ceremony of Trinity Block of Haven of Hope Hospital (HHH) today (June 15) marked a new milestone in HHH's rehabilitation and infirmary services development.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam. Other guests attending the ceremony included the Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan; the Chairman of the Hospital Authority (HA), Mr Henry Fan; the Chief Executive of the HA, Dr Tony Ko; the Chairman of the Hospital Governing Committee of HHH, Professor Joseph Kwan; the Chief Executive Officer of Haven of Hope Christian Service, Dr Lam Ching-choi; the Chairman of the Sai Kung District Council, Mr Francis Chau; the Cluster Chief Executive of Kowloon East Cluster, Dr Deacons Yeung; and the Hospital Chief Executive of Tseung Kwan O Hospital and Haven of Hope Hospital, Dr Kenny Yuen.

Mrs Lam said this new building is named Trinity Block and has come into operation since the first quarter of this year. During the fifth wave, wards were retrofitted in just two days' time, providing timely relief on beds to accommodate the influx of confirmed cases. This selfless act embodied the Haven of Hope spirit - with loving care and professionalism, we serve; with progressive and evangelistic attitudes, we commit. She would like to express her heartfelt gratitude to all dedicated hospital staff who fully committed to anti-epidemic efforts.

Mr Fan said the expansion of HHH was one of the significant projects in the HA's first 10-year Hospital Development Plan. He expressed gratitude for the Government's commitment to public healthcare services. Mr Fan added, "Upon expansion, HHH's ambulatory services will be strengthened by the establishment of a day medical and rehabilitation centre with the aim of reducing unnecessary hospitalisation and an integrated carers' support centre to strengthen the caregivers' ability to care for the patients and to alleviate their distress so that discharged patients can recuperate in the community with peace of mind."

Professor Kwan explained that when HHH was established in the 1950s, it was founded in response to the social needs at that time, to take care of a group of poor and sick refugees suffering from tuberculosis, and HHH has always upheld this mission. "To this day, during the service commencement of Trinity Block, our society was also facing a rampant infectious disease, and staff at the hospital rose up to the occasion, like in the early days, to actively respond to the needs of society through initiating effort to admit and care for patients with COVID-19. For the hospital to engage in such a mission, it really needs the support of the Government and the HA, as well as the selfless dedication of hospital colleagues."

Trinity Block consists of three connecting buildings with a Y-shaped design, namely a faith wing, a hope wing and a love wing, embodying the selfless spirit of its healthcare workers. Trinity Garden, which is located on the fifth floor, provides not only the steps and slopes for rehabilitation training, but also different kinds of trees and plants that blossom during different seasons. A mosaic mural is placed inside the garden to stimulate patients' senses of touch, sight, smell and sound. The whole concept is to lessen the physical and emotional distress on both patients and caregivers.

Trinity Block will be able to provide 160 additional extended care beds and re-provisioning of 116 infirmary beds. Clinical, supporting and auxiliary facilities will also be expanded to support additional inpatient care services as well as to enhance service capacity and operational efficiency. The total number of beds in HHH will also be increased from 521 to 681 after the expansion.
