6x GREEN$ at GREEN@COMMUNITY this month (with photos)
*****************************************************
There are currently 11 Recycling Stations, 32 Recycling Stores and more than 120 Recycling Spots under the GREEN@COMMUNITY network. Recycling Spots are recycling booths that operate at fixed locations and times. During the promotion period, members of the public can earn six times GREEN$ points under the GREEN$ Electronic Participation Incentive Scheme (ePIS) on submission of designated recyclables (including waste paper, metals, plastics, glass containers, regulated electrical equipment, small electrical appliances, fluorescent lamps/tubes, and rechargeable batteries) to any recycling point of GREEN@COMMUNITY so that they can gain GREEN$ points more expeditiously for gift redemption.
In addition to the recycling promotion commencing in June and subject to the epidemic situation and social distancing measures, the EPD also plans to hold the major promotional and educational campaign GREEN@COMMUNITY Recycling Month at its Recycling Stations this November. The campaign aims to celebrate with members of the public the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR and share with them the fun of practising clean recycling. Details will be announced later.
A spokesman for the EPD said, to assist and encourage the public in actively practicing waste reduction and recycling in daily life, as well as to complement the future implementation of municipal solid waste charging, the EPD has been enhancing the support for waste reduction and recycling at the district level, including expanding and upgrading the community recycling network GREEN@COMMUNITY so as to assist the public to practice clean recycling. In 2021, around 3.8 million visitors took over 14 400 tonnes of recyclables to the Recycling Stations and Recycling Stores. The best performing Recycling Station, GREEN@SHA TIN, and the best performing Recycling Store, GREEN@PO LAM, respectively collected over 800 tonnes and 600 tonnes of recyclables in the year.
The Recycling Station and the Recycling Store that received the highest number of visits in 2021 were GREEN@EASTERN and GREEN@QUARRY BAY respectively, and both are located in the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island. GREEN@TAI PO MARKET was the Recycling Store that issued the highest number of GREEN$ smart cards last year, with over 6 000 cards issued. With the launch of the GREEN$ mobile application this January, members of the public can register as members of the GREEN$ ePIS through their smartphones, making their participation in clean recycling more convenient.
The spokesman highlighted that the EPD has also been enhancing the community recycling services and efficiency through application of technology. Under the Pilot Programme on Smart Recycling System launched in late 2020, the EPD has been testing in phases smart recycling systems (such as smart balances, gift redemption units and smart recycling bins), with the Internet of Things as the skeleton technology, for local application and assessment of their effectiveness. Starting from May this year, smart recycling facilities are being progressively set up at all Recycling Stations and Recycling Stores. Meanwhile, the EPD is identifying other suitable places to increase the application points of smart recycling systems up to 80 to 100 locations.
