Transport Department launches trial scheme to enhance zebra crossing facilities (with photo)

     The Transport Department (TD) said today (April 22) that the department has launched a trial scheme for about six monthes to enhance zebra crossing facilities which aims to remind motorists to stop and give way to pedestrians by making the zebra crossings more conspicuous.
      
     The TD has installed new Belisha beacons at two zebra crossings in Kwai Tsing, and will add more new beacons at three other zebra crossings in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon City and Tai Po Districts. The new beacons consist of a halo of flashing yellow light and a post with flashing white bands. They are more visible than the traditional design of a yellow globe lamp atop a black and white post to draw the attention of motorists to the presence of zebra crossings.      Upon completion of the trial scheme, the TD will review its effectiveness before considering further deployment at other locations. 
      
     Motorists are reminded to observe road safety and look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down when approaching a zebra crossing. They must stop and give way to pedestrians who have stepped onto the zebra crossing.
