Postcard design competition promotes building safety to community (with photos)
*******************************************************************************
The competition aimed to disseminate building safety messages and promote the importance of four core concepts of building safety, namely structural safety, fire safety, environmental hygiene and public safety, through the sketching of different buildings in Hong Kong.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony held at the BD's Building Information Centre, the Deputy Director of Buildings, Mr Yu Tak-cheung, said building safety is closely related to everyone's daily life. Through taking part in the competition, people could better understand the conditions of buildings in their community and hence recognise the importance of building safety. It could also enhance their awareness of the living environment and sense of responsibility towards it.
The competition attracted an enthusiastic response with over 5 100 entries from more than 380 schools and institutions, and the winning entries showed a wealth of innovation and creativity. The first runner-up in the Primary Section designed a vintage-style Chinese calendar to promote the importance of building maintenance, while the champion in the Secondary Section reminded people of the importance of regular building inspection by drawing a dilapidated building with the walls opened up. One of the judges, Executive Committee member of the Hong Kong Society for Education in Art (HKSEA) Mr Lee Yuk-shan, praised the contestants for their outstanding performance and skilled drawing techniques.
Organised by the BD, the postcard design competition was co-organised by Hong Kong Education City (HKedCity) and supported by the HKSEA. The competition was divided into four categories, namely the Parent-Child, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary and Open Sections. A judging panel chaired by the Director of Buildings, Mr Cheung Tin-cheung; the Head of Development of HKedCity, Ms Ling Hung; Mr Lee; and co-founder of Urban Sketchers Hong Kong Mr Alvin Wong selected the winners based on the content, composition and creativity of the artworks.
The winning entries will be exhibited in the community and souvenirs inspired by those entries will be produced as part of efforts to educate building owners on the importance of carrying out timely building inspections and repair works to help create a safe living environment.
The list of the winners and their winning entries can be viewed at the BD's website: www.bd.gov.hk/doc/whats-new/events-and-publicity/postcard2019/winners_list.pdf (Chinese only).
