CAD Headquarters open days conclude successfully (with photos)

"The open house event, held on April 21, 23, 24 and 25, aimed at enhancing the public’s knowledge of and interest in aviation and related technology. It was one of the activities of HK SciFest 2018 presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department," a spokesperson for the CAD said.
The highlight of the event was opening the ATC Tower Simulator to the public visit for the very first time. The Simulator provides a realistic simulation of the airport’s ATC Tower including a 360 degree digital panel and is used for training Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCOs). The visitors were able to experience the feeling of being in the ATC Tower saw how ATCOs direct flights during takeoff and landing under different times of the day and weather conditions.
To match the SciFest theme, CAD staff delivered talks and provided an in-depth and easy-to-comprehend analysis of some interesting topics relating to aviation technologies, one of which was the evolution of the Air Traffic Management System (ATMS) in Hong Kong. The new ATMS is designed to meet the latest international standards on technical, safety and ATC operational requirements, including enhanced flight information and data processing, advanced automatic safety net features, and more precise flight trajectory prediction functions. It meets the latest requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and is on par with the most advanced international air traffic management technologies. The safety, reliability and generally smooth round-the-clock ATC services of the ATMS have been acknowledged by the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation and senior management of the ICAO Asia and Pacific Office.
Other interesting topics included flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders (also known as black boxes), digital tower technologies for air traffic control, the evolution of the instrument landing system, the principles of flight, global navigation satellite system landing procedures, windshear and turbulence, and the evolution of air traffic surveillance technologies.
In addition, accompanied by CAD staff, visitors toured the Aviation Education Path to learn more about Hong Kong's aviation history, aviation security and air traffic control operations.
"The CAD is much encouraged by the overwhelming response as the quota for most of the activities was filled a few days after enrolment was opened, illustrating the public's interest in and support for the aviation industry. Those who missed out on the CAD Open Day event this time may consider visiting the Aviation Education Path at the CAD Headquarters. Pre-booked guided tours are available for groups free of charge. For more details and application forms, please refer to the CAD website (www.cad.gov.hk/english/publicservices.html)," the spokesman said.
