International study ranks Hong Kong students among world's best in collaborative problem solving

The Education Bureau (EDB) today (November 21) said it was pleased to learn that Hong Kong students' performance in collaborative problem solving (CPS) in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 was among the world's best.
PISA is a three-year international study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development that assesses the reading, mathematical and scientific literacy in the mother tongue of 15-year-old students.
The key findings of PISA 2015 were released in December 2016, and the results of the CPS assessment in the same study were announced today. Fifty-two countries or regions, including Hong Kong, participated in the international CPS assessment, which was held for the first time. Hong Kong's 15-year-old students ranked third, with a mean score of 541.
"The outstanding performance of Hong Kong students in PISA once again validates that Hong Kong education is heading in the right direction, including the implementation of strategies for information technology in education, which enable students to utilise different e-learning platforms and tools for collaborative learning, and the Learning to Learn curriculum reform, which emphasises the development of students' generic skills such as collaboration skills and problem solving skills and encourages them to learn through project learning and other enquiry learning activities. Our students' achievement is the result of the concerted efforts of schools and teachers, as well as the support of various stakeholders, in taking forward the education reform," a spokesman for the EDB said.
"As in other PISA studies, Hong Kong students' socio-economic status seems to have less effect on their CPS performance as compared with other participating countries or regions. In other words, Hong Kong has done well in providing education opportunity with high quality and equity for all students, which in turn facilitates social mobility. The assessment results reaffirmed the quality of our education system," the spokesman added.
Background information of PISA 2015 and key statistics of the CPS assessment results are in the Annex.
