EKCC Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony held today (with photos)

Officiating at the foundation stone laying ceremony, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, said the EKCC is another important cultural facility invested in by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government after the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD). It will help reinforce Hong Kong's position as an international art and cultural metropolis and provide training and performing venues for cultural and arts talents in Hong Kong. In five years, the EKCC and the WKCD facilities will become two key cultural landmarks, providing more fascinating cultural activities for the public.
The EKCC is located at the junction of Ngau Tau Kok Road and Kwun Tong Road. The multi-purpose venue will be able to meet the needs of various cultural activities of different scales. Expected to be completed in late 2020 and to open in late 2021, the project will alleviate the pressure on performing venues in the communities and the arts sector, as well as enhancing arts development in the district.
In addition, the EKCC will be equipped with multi-purpose facilities to suit the production needs of diverse art forms and arts groups. It will also provide space for established arts groups to reach out and build audiences in the community, which in turn will enhance the cultural ambience in East Kowloon.
It is also conveniently connected to the surrounding transportation nodes and neighbouring Telford Gardens, Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate and Amoy Gardens through an efficient network of pedestrian passages. Lined with art booths and small-scale exhibitions, some of these passages will provide locations for cultural promotion activities. These public open spaces will cater for different types of activity ranging from outdoor performances and community events to leisure activities, making city life more vibrant and abundant.
Other officiating guests at the ceremony included the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah; the Chairman of the Kwun Tong District Council, Dr Bunny Chan; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Director of Architectural Services, Mr Leung Koon-kee; the Executive Director of Rocco Design Architects Limited, Dr Rocco Yim; and the Chief Executive and Executive Director of New Concepts Foundation Limited, Mr Clement Kwan.
