Territory-wide operation to promote pedestrian safety

     Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety operation yesterday (October 12). Through stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular senior citizens, were reminded of the importance of road safety.

     A total of 10 verbal warnings and 1,493 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road traffic regulations during the operation conducted from October 6 to October 12.

     During the period, Police issued 1,132 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 142 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 92 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than by means of the light signal crossing.

     "Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
