Import ban on mussels harvested from Spring Bay, Tasmania, Australia, lifted

     The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (September 5) announced that the import ban imposed on mussels from Spring Bay, Tasmania, Australia, has been lifted with immediate effect.

     In view of a notification from the Australian authorities that mussels harvested from Spring Bay, Tasmania, Australia, were under recall due to the detection of unsatisfactory levels of diarrhetic shellfish toxins, the CFS had imposed an import ban on all mussels harvested in the area since March 18 this year to safeguard public health and food safety.

     A CFS spokesman said, "The Centre has been following up on the incident closely with the Australian authorities since then. In view of the submission of an investigation report and the implementation of surveillance programmes by the Australian authorities, the CFS has conducted an assessment and decided to lift the import ban imposed on mussels from Spring Bay, Tasmania, Australia."

     The spokesman added, "The CFS will continue to monitor closely mussels imported from the area. Appropriate actions will be taken to safeguard food safety and public health."
