Fire Services funeral with full honours for Senior Station Officer Thomas Cheung

     The Fire Services Department (FSD) will hold an official funeral service with full honours for the late Senior Station Officer, Mr Thomas Cheung, at the Universal Funeral Parlour, Hung Hom, Kowloon, on July 17 (Sunday).

     A customary mourning ceremony open to friends, relatives, government officials, community dignitaries, colleagues and members of the public will be held at 8.30am.

  The mourning ceremony will be followed by an official ceremony starting at 9.30am. Senior government officials and the Director of Fire Services, Mr Lai Man-hin, will lay wreaths at the ceremony.

     The hearse will leave the Universal Funeral Parlour at about 10am after the official ceremony. A Service Contingent will parade outside the funeral parlour to pay last respects to Senior Station Officer Cheung.

  The hearse will arrive outside Amoycan Industrial Centre, Ngau Tau Kok Road, at about 10.20am. An on-site ceremony will be held outside the building for local dignitaries and residents of the local district to lay wreaths.

     The hearse will proceed to the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy at 11 Pak Shing Kok Road, Tseung Kwan O. A Service Contingent will parade at the Academy to pay last tributes to Mr Cheung. Local dignitaries will also lay wreaths at the ceremony.

     The cortege will then pass Tai Po Fire Station where Mr Cheung had worked, and leave for Gallant Garden at Wo Hop Shek Cemetery for the burial service.

     The following is a brief biography of Senior Station Officer Thomas Cheung:

     The late Senior Station Officer, Mr Thomas Cheung, was born in 1986. Having received tertiary education at the University of Hong Kong, he joined the FSD as a Station Officer in 2010. With his meritorious performance, he was promoted to Senior Station Officer in 2015, and was posted to the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy as a Technical Rescue Instructor in 2016.

     Throughout his five years of service with the FSD, he fully demonstrated his operational competence, excellent performance and whole-hearted devotion to duty. His strong commitment to serve, professionalism and leadership were amply displayed in a number of firefighting and rescue operations that he took part in. His remarkable working knowledge, enthusiasm and congeniality also earned him the respect and trust of his colleagues.

     When attending a No. 4 alarm fire at Amoycan Industrial Centre, Ngau Tau Kok Road, on June 21, 2016, Senior Station Officer Thomas Cheung sustained serious injuries in the course of carrying out his duties and passed away on the same day. His tragic death is a great loss not only to the FSD, but also to the community. His bravery and selflessness will live in the minds of the people of Hong Kong forever.

     Aged 30, Senior Station Officer Cheung is survived by his wife and a son.
