The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence was converted from the Lei Yue Mun Fort, which was originally built by the British in 1887. The fort saw fierce fighting during World War II. After the war it was used as a training ground by the British Army. In 1993, the former Urban Council decided to convert the fort into a museum, which was officially opened to the public on July 25, 2000.
