A talented young clarinet player from Hong Kong, Calvin Leung, is taking part in the 13th Rome Chamber Music Festival, with the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels (HKETO, Brussels). He is one of 23 young artists who are studying and performing with Festival artists in the beautiful Palazzo Barberini, a landmark of Baroque architecture and home to the national fine arts gallery, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, in Rome from June 26 to 30.
Founded in 2003, the Festival presents a diverse programme of masterworks performed by prominent artists and aspiring music talents over its five-day period.
This is the third time that a young Hong Kong musician has been selected for the Festival's Young Artist Programme. In this year's Festival, Mr Leung has been invited to perform pieces by Hungarian composer Ernõ Dohnányi.
HKETO, Brussels regularly supports and promotes Hong Kong's creative industries and enables Hong Kong talents to perform in Europe. So far this year it has supported the Hong Kong comics industry at the International Comics Festival of Angoulême as well as a Chinese music ensemble performing in Brussels, Luxembourg, Paris and the Hague; three Hong Kong postgraduate students of classical music performing in Barcelona, Dublin and Madrid; a Hong Kong-based industrial designer telling his Hong Kong success story in Belgium; and the Hong Kong film industry showcasing the excellence of Hong Kong films at two renowned Italian film festivals, namely the 18th Far East Film Festival in Udine and the Dragon Film Festival in Florence and Prato.
Calvin Leung
Calvin Leung studied at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with Maria Wong and Andrew Simon and received a Master of Music Performance. He has won numerous prizes and awards in local and international competitions. He has performed with the Macau Orchestra, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Professional Winds, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and Musica Viva. He has performed frequently in Hong Kong and abroad including at the Montecito International Music Festival, the Music Seminar in Kitakaruizawa and the Macao International Music Festival.
