Update on cluster of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae cases in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement of a cluster of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) cases in two wards (a Medical Ward and a Mixed Ward), the spokesperson of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital gave the following update today (June 24):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed active surveillance and contact tracing. Six more male patients (aged 56 to 85) have been confirmed as having CRE. One patient has already been discharged. Another patient passed away due to underlying disease on June 4. The remaining four patients are still hospitalised under isolation with stable condition.

     Infection control measures have been stepped up according to established guidelines in the wards. All other patients in the wards concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
