Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae with IMP-carbapenemese cases in Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital made the following announcement today (April 14):

     Four male patients (aged 78 to 84) in a medical ward have been confirmed as having Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae with IMP-carbapenemese since March 23. All patients are without clinical symptoms. One patient has recovered and has already been discharged. The other three patients are being hospitalised under isolation with stable condition.

     The Infection Control Team of the hospital and Kowloon Central Cluster and experts of the Centre for Health Protection have reviewed the cases. The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the ward:

1. Apply stringent contact precautions;
2. Conduct admission screening of patients;
3. Enhance cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned; and
4. Enhance hand hygiene of staff.

     Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
