***********************************************************

In response to media enquiries on a case of manslaughter and fighting in a public place which occurred in Hung Hom, a spokesman for the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau said today (October 20):

"The Government attaches great importance to the case, which has been taken over by the Police's District Crime Squad for follow-up investigation. We expressed sorrow over the death of the tourist and extended our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. We have requested the Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong (TIC) to review critically whether the local travel agency responsible for receiving the tour group concerned has complied with all the 10 requirements to combat "zero/negative fare tour packages". We have also requested the TIC to get in touch with the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sport and Tourism with a view to gathering more information on the inbound Mainland group tour for follow-up. We will tackle any irregularities concerning travel agencies in a serious manner."
