More than 100 construction workers today (May 27) took part in a qigong competition at Golden Bauhinia Square. The event marked the launch of Construction Safety Week 2015.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said, "To ensure construction safety, we should not only focus on prevention of injuries and occupational diseases, but also the inner world of workers. We hope to draw their attention to their daily habits and help them build up a healthy lifestyle for enhancing health conditions, leading them to appreciate the importance of taking care of their work as well as their bodies."

Also officiating at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Construction Industry Council, Mr Lee Shing-see, said, "Following a consultation with the industry, the Council and the Development Bureau developed a tailor-made smartphone application, 'Construction Safety App'. Through this one-stop platform, we hope to provide industry practitioners with all kinds of safety information."

To encourage the industry to adopt qigong as a morning exercise on construction sites, a qigong competition was organised to mark the start of Construction Safety Week 2015. In today's final, eight teams comprising more than 100 construction workers demonstrated their qigong abilities at Golden Bauhinia Square. Qigong masters from the General Administration of Sport of China were invited to be the judges.

Jointly organised by the Development Bureau and the Construction Industry Council, Construction Safety Week was launched in 2012 to promote a zero-accident site environment. The campaign has received support from various professional groups, organisations, trade associations and labour unions.

Other activities of Construction Safety Week 2015 include a safety conference, visits to construction sites with exemplary safety performance and the Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme Award Presentation Ceremony.
