Person in custody commits self-harm
***********************************

Correctional Officers found a person in custody having committed self-harm at Stanley Prison today (June 15).

At 12.15pm, officers in the centre hospital found wounds on the left wrist of a 35-year-old male person in custody.  Upon enquiry, officers noted that the person in custody had cut his wrist by using his own plastic knife used for meal.  He was found conscious at the time.

The medical officer in the centre hospital immediately gave treatment to the person in custody, and transferred him to a public hospital for further medical examination and treatment.  He will be referred to Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre later for assessment.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The male person in custody was convicted of an offence of manslaughter.
