The Hong Kong Chamber Choir will perform this April in the "Magnificat" concert presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The programme will include Bach's "Magnificat" (BWV 243), Monteverdi's "Messa a 4 voci da cappella" (Mass for 4 voices) (1650) and Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater".
Under the baton of conductor Carmen Koon, the Hong Kong Soloists and the Hong Kong Chamber Choir will perform with vocalists including soprano Rosaline Pi, counter-tenor Enico Luk, tenor Sam Lau and bass-baritone Edmund Kwan.
The Hong Kong Chamber Choir was established in 1999 with an emphasis on vocal (as individual) and choral (as chorister) technique. Over the past years, the Choir has given a number of successful concerts including Schutz's "Christmas Story", Handel's oratorio "Alexander's Feast", Bach's "St John Passion", "St Matthew Passion", Handel's pastoral opera "Acis and Galatea", "Vocal Delights Made in Hong Kong", Fauré's "Requiem", Haydn's "The Creation", Purcell's "Anthems" and more.
The Hong Kong Soloists was formed in 1998 by a group of professional musicians and active performers in the local classical music scene. The group's performances include solo, orchestra and concerto works of the vocal repertoire.
"Magnificat" by Hong Kong Chamber Choir will be staged at 8pm on April 20 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced at $140, $120 and $100 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A pre-concert talk, "Renaissance and Baroque Sacred Vocal Music" (to be conducted in Cantonese), hosted by soprano Rosaline Pi will be held at 8pm on April 11 (Friday) at AC2, 4/F, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
