The Tianjin People's Art Theatre will visit Hong Kong to stage "The Beauty" in September. Starring famous diva of Chinese cinema Liu Xiaoqing, the production is directed by renowned director Tian Qinxin.
"The Beauty" links two legendary Chinese women - the enigmatic Sai Jinhua, who came to prominence in the 19th century as the country was buffeted by political upheavals and crises, and Liu Xiaoqing, a legend of China's entertainment world, who witnesses the development of the Chinese film industry.
Liu Xiaoqing is an actress, producer, director and writer. She is a national class one performer and winner of the Golden Rooster Award and the Hundred Flowers Award for Best Actress. Her filmography includes such classics as "The Little Flower", "The Wilderness", "Chuntao", "Hibiscus Town", "Burning of the Imperial Palace" and "Reign Behind the Curtain".
Drama director of the National Theatre of China Tian Qinxin has carved a niche in Chinese theatre with her fusion of contemporary artistic concepts and Eastern aesthetics. Some of her more notable productions are "The Field of Life and Death", "Hurricane", "The Orphan of Zhao", "Student Zhao Ping", "Red Rose and White Rose", "Ming Dynasty" and "The Yellow Storm".
Founded in 1951, the Tianjin People's Art Theatre now boasts more than 60 years of history, with a talented cast and crew who have contributed to a repertory of over 300 productions spanning Chinese and Western drama of all ages and styles.
"The Beauty" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be performed in Putonghua, with Chinese and English surtitles, at 7.30pm on September 6, 7 and 8 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets priced at $120, $220, $320 and $420 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package. The programme contains smoking scenes.
