Correctional officers stop remand inmate from self-harm
*******************************************************

Correctional officers stopped a remand inmate from further hurting herself at Lai King Correctional Institution yesterday (May 15).

At around 6pm, the 17-year-old female remand inmate was found weeping inside the hospital ward and having scratched her hands with a buckle removed from her brassiere. Her wrists and left forearm sustained minor injuries. In-house medical examination and treatment was given and arrangements were made for her to receive psychological counselling later on.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The remand inmate was charged with the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
