The following is issued on behalf of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education:

The Committee on Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE) this afternoon (March 23) launched a campaign to promote "Respect and Inclusiveness" at a ceremony at Tsuen Wan Plaza.

Officiating at the launch ceremony, the CPCE Chairman, Dr Joseph Lee, said, "Hong Kong is a diversified society. With a mix of people from different races and cultural backgrounds packed into a small and fast-paced city, it is crucial to cultivate an atmosphere of inclusiveness and mutual respect in the community.

"The CPCE has all along been promoting civic values via various channels. The new 'Respect and Inclusiveness' campaign aims to encourage the public, particularly young people, to respect people from different cultural backgrounds and with different points of view in society," he said.

A television Announcement in the Public Interest (API) produced for the publicity campaign was broadcast for the first time at the ceremony. With the message "Respect different values, Embrace different views", the API hopes to encourage people to see things from others' points of view and listen to different opinions, thus fostering social harmony. Another TV API will be launched in April to promote the message from another perspective.

To encourage young people to appreciate different opinions and the needs of others, the committee has produced four lively situational videos on the subject. The videos are being shown at the Civic Education Resource Centre in Youth Square, Chai Wan, starting this month and are also available for viewing online.

Meanwhile, the CPCE has been working with the Wofoo Leaders' Network and the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts in staging the "Social Inclusion Community Arts Project" from December 2012 to July 2013. Through community art workshops, a photo competition, roving shows at schools and roving exhibitions, the project hopes to foster understanding among the general public, ethnic minorities and new arrivals, and cultivate mutual respect and inclusiveness on the diversity of each others' cultures and habits.

The committee will also disseminate the campaign messages to various sectors of society by producing a radio drama and inviting people from different backgrounds to share their thoughts on "Respect and Inclusiveness" during radio interviews.
