Musical "Rising Sun" to tell the story of young Dr Sun Yat-sen
*******************************************************

Spring-Time Experimental Theatre's "Rising Sun" tells the story of young Dr Sun Yat-sen growing up in Hong Kong and taking his first steps into his revolutionary career. The original musical was performed three times in Hong Kong and was invited to be one of the programmes at the 2011 Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival and the 25th Macao International Music Festival. The current production is a phase II version with additional elements.

The first step in mapping out New China was taken in Hong Kong. As the pioneering generation of a bilingual English and Chinese-speaking elite emerged in Hong Kong, the colony's social order inspired Sun Yat-sen to reflect on the future of his country. Unfortunately, corruption within the Qing government was almost unstoppable.

The story takes place at a time when Sun Yat-sen was studying in Hong Kong. He formed the "Four Desperados" with his allies to save the country, and had the care and support of his confidante, Chen Cui-fen. Then his wife, Lu Mu-zhen, arrived. It is never easy to find the balance between family, country and love. How could he take the first step of revolution at the age of only 22?

The production has a very strong team both on and behind the stage. The script advisor is Peter B. Sun, a descendant of Dr Sun Yat-sen; the history advisor is Dr Joseph Ting, former Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History; the producer is Clifton Ko; the play was conceived and is co-produced by Professor David Lung of the Department of Architecture, University of Hong Kong; the executive producer and director is Benny Yu; the script and lyrics are by Joseph Choi, and the theme composed by Tonia Ko. Renowned pianist Nancy Loo will play live music.

Performers include Angus Chan, Yun-ki Lee, Ka-wai Leung, Donavan Chan, Ronald Lam, Owen Kwok, Cecilia Chan and Caroline Lam£®
