The winners of the open category and the student category of the 22nd Chinese Poetry Writing Competition have both used elegant ci poetry to express their feelings on scenery.
Mr Huang Yee-chow and Mr Law Kwong-fai, a student from the Hong Kong Baptist University, were awarded the First Prize in the open category and student category respectively for their outstanding works.
Other winning works featured a wide range of topics including the writers' impressions after visiting the Lion Rock and Wing Lee Street and their feelings regarding old photos.
Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony held today (September 20) at the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL), the Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Libraries and Development), Mr Lee Yuk-man, pointed out that classical Chinese poetry has received high praise over thousands of years for its refined words and exquisite rhythm.
He said that classical Chinese poetry is not simply an ancient genre, but is also well suited to writing and expressing one's feelings in modern times.
Since 1991, the annual competition has been organised every year to promote proficiency in Chinese language and appreciation of rhyming Chinese literature. This is the eleventh time for participants to showcase their literary talent with ci poetry.
The adjudicators for this year's competition were Professor Ho Man-wui, Professor Chow Sik-fuk, Professor Chan Chi-ching, Professor Wong Kwan-io and Professor Lau Wai-lam.
More than 600 entries were received in the competition. Participants showcased their creativity with topics ranging from descriptions of nature and day-to-day life to those concerning personal feelings. The competition has been well received in the community after years of promotion.
