A Correctional Services Department (CSD) officer prevented a suicide attempt by an inmate at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre at about 5am today (August 17).

The 53-year-old inmate was found tying a knot with a bed sheet onto a grille gate, and then lying on the ground with a bed sheet tied around his neck inside a cell. The officer immediately stopped him and sent him to the Centre Hospital for further examination and treatment. The inmate was conscious and no external injury was detected.

A CSD spokesperson said, "The department has been using all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. The measures include administrative arrangements, improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The man, who had a past record of harming himself, is serving an imprisonment sentence for six months on a charge of theft.
