The names of the 287 validly nominated candidates for the 2012 Legislative Council Election were gazetted today (August 7). The number for each candidate or list of candidates on the ballot papers, which was determined by drawing of lots, was also announced.
A total of 216 candidates who belong to 67 lists are validly nominated to compete for 35 seats in the five geographical constituencies.
For the functional constituency election, there are 53 validly nominated candidates (not including candidates of the District Council (second) functional constituency), and 37 of them will run for 14 seats in the functional constituencies.
A total of 18 candidates belonging to 7 lists are validly nominated to contest five seats in the District Council (second) functional constituency.
Sixteen candidates in 14 functional constituencies will be returned to the Legislative Council uncontested. These constituencies are: Heung Yee Kuk, insurance, transport, labour, real estate and construction, commercial (first), commercial (second), industrial (first), industrial (second), finance, import and export, wholesale and retail, catering and District Council (first). About 23,000 electors in these functional constituencies do not have to vote.
"The Legislative Council Election will be held on September 9. A total of 549 ordinary polling stations and 25 dedicated polling stations across Hong Kong will be open on the polling day for registered electors of all geographical constituencies and the contested functional constituencies to cast their votes," a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office said.
"Of the 3,466,000-odd registered geographical constituency electors, about 3,220,000 electors can cast one vote each in their respective geographical constituency and the newly created District Council (second) functional constituency. About 218,000 registered electors of the remaining 14 contested functional constituencies can vote for their respective functional constituency," he said.
The polling hours for the ordinary polling stations and the three dedicated polling stations set up at police stations will be from 7.30am to 10.30pm. For the 22 dedicated polling stations set up in penal institutions, for security reasons, the polling hours will be from 9am to 4pm.
