A total of 55 entries were received from students of tertiary education institutes, the property management sector and catering services industry in the Water Conservation Design Competition organised by the Water Supplies Department (WSD).
The competition was an initiative by the WSD launched last September to promote water conservation. Creative designs on water conservation were sought from tertiary education students, while practical water saving practices were invited from the property management sector and catering services industry.
Speaking at the competition's award presentation ceremony today (April 19) at Youth Square, Chai Wan, the Director of Water Supplies, Mr Ma Lee-tak, said, "Celebrating the 160th year of water supply in Hong Kong this year, the WSD will continue its mission of providing a reliable supply of quality water for the community. It will also disseminate a water conservation message through various channels to encourage the general public to save water.
"We appeal for the community's active participation and support for the Total Water Management Strategy, which was mapped out by the WSD in 2008 following a comprehensive study into the water supply situation in Hong Kong. Placing emphasis on containing the growth of water demand through conservation, the strategy calls on every citizen to make an effort to save water in their daily lives," he added.
Professor Ho Kin-chung, Chairman of the competition's jury panel and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on the Quality of Water Supplies, commended the success of the competition in arousing public awareness on water saving.
"I am particularly encouraged by the students' creative water conservation designs, which demonstrate their potential in the management of water resources in the future," he said.
A champion, two runners-up, and merit awards were selected from each of the three categories. Considering the overall high quality submissions in the property management sector category, five extra commendations were awarded in the category.
Other members of the jury panel are: Legislative Council members, Professor Patrick Lau Sau-shing and Dr Raymond Ho; Chairman of Advisory Council on the Environment, Professor Paul Lam; President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Professor Reuben Chu; and the Immediate Past President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, Ms Anna Kwong.
The winning entries will be on display at a roving exhibition held at the Exhibition Gallery, Sha Tin Town Hall, from April 21 to 25, and the Immigration Tower in Wan Chai, from May 3 to 9, before moving to various locations in the territory. Admission is free.
Results of the competition and the roving exhibition schedule are available on the WSD's website, www.wsd.gov.hk.
