The Hong Kong Observatory is further enhancing its regional weather information service. Starting from today (December 28), real-time weather information from the Community Weather Information Network (Co-WIN) will be added to the webpage for Regional Weather in Hong Kong. Wind direction and speed information recorded at the Hong Kong Sea School, which is a member of Co-WIN, will be provided to the public in real time.
The Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Dr Lee Boon-ying, said, "The weather data gathered at the Hong Kong Sea School, which is located near the centre of Stanley and overlooking Tai Tam Bay, provides a good reference of the weather in the area."
Co-WIN is a weather information network established jointly by the Hong Kong Observatory, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Joint-School Meteorological Association. Co-WIN aims to promote weather education and provide comprehensive weather information to the public. This is the third year of its operation, and its membership has grown to over 90 members.
The Principal of Hong Kong Sea School, Mr Bill Hutchinson, was pleased that his school could join the Hong Kong Observatory to provide weather information to serve the public.
"The incorporation of the school's weather information to the official website of the Observatory is an enhancement of the Observatory's public service. It will benefit a wider spectrum of the public," Mr Hutchinson said.
Mr Hutchinson further pointed out that besides being one of the major tourist spots in Hong Kong, Stanley was also a training centre and race arena for water sports. He believed that overseas tourists, water sports enthusiasts, and the public, would all benefit from the weather information provided by the Hong Kong Sea School.
The weather station at the Hong Kong Sea School provides wind direction and speed information round-the-clock. The public can access the information from the Observatory's Regional Weather webpage at
www.hko.gov.hk/wxinfo/ts/index_wind_e.htm or from the Co-WIN's website at weather.ap.polyu.edu.hk/index.php
