Employer ordered to pay MPF contributions

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (December 20) successfully pursued a claim in the Small Claims Tribunal for $280 for an employee who was owed MPF contributions by his employer.

     At the Tribunal's hearing today, the defendant Ha Wai Suet, formerly trading as Natural Skin Plus Beauty Centre, did not appear. In its absence, the Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $280, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable. The amount awarded will be reimbursed to the employee's MPF account as soon as it is received by the MPFA.

     Meanwhile, the Adjudicator ordered two other defendants, Lucky Dragon Boat Restaurant Limited and Lipton Wong Asia Pacific Co., Limited formerly known as Lipton Wong Co, to pay the MPFA financial penalties of $15,000 and $10,000 respectively, which were imposed by the MPFA for failure to make MPF contributions for their employees.

     The Adjudicator further ordered the three defendants to pay $119, $80 and $96 respectively as the costs of the claims.
