Praised for playing "xiao music from the deep recesses of the soul", renowned Chinese musician Tam Po-shek will collaborate with Tse Chun-yan (guqin), Lam Siu-king (pipa), Chui Mei-ting (zheng) and Leung Yan-chiu (sheng) for two recitals in January.
The recitals will take place at 2.30pm and 7.30pm, January 23, 2011 (Sunday) at the Xiang Hai Xuan Multi-purpose Hall, Nan Lian Garden. The virtuosi will perform a series of Chinese compositions, including "The Toll of the Temple Bell", "Wild Geese on the Sandbank", "Everlasting Yearning", "Lament of Lady Zhaojun", "Winds Bringing the Plums Down", "The Moon in Fall", "The Rain at Night in Bashan" and "Autumn Hills".
Famous for making xiao as well as playing them, Tam Po-shek is dedicated to exploring and expanding the expressive abilities of the xiao through performance and research, and has made significant contributions in the field. He has performed in countries all over the world.
Blending traditional elements with the innovative, Tam's music emphasises an exploration on the philosophical level, and his highly innovative musicality has won him attention and wide acclaim among fellow musicians. He has been interviewed by the media in Hong Kong, the Mainland and Japan, and has also appeared in numerous film features. Critics have written, "he is so adept in using the xiao to tell each story" and, "with one solo instrument, he is capable of evoking the deepest emotions in the hundreds and thousands listening to him."
"The Chinese Flute with Quaint Charm" Xiao Recital by Tam Po-shek is a programme of the Nan Lian Garden Chinese Music Series, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $220 (free seating) are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may receive a 50% discount (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20% is offered for the Nan Lian Garden Chinese Music series package and group bookings.
Other attractions in the Nan Lian Garden Chinese Music Series include "The Classic Charm of Kunqu", "Pipa Recital by Zhang Hongyan" and "Zheng Recital by Wang Zhongshan".
