Five employers ordered to pay MPF contributions

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (December 1) obtained an order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions of about $161,000 against an employer at the District Court.

     The employer, Land Asia Management Limited, was ordered to pay the MPFA $161,021.53, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 30 employees of the defendant.

     Meanwhile, the MPFA successfully pursued four claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $55,000 on behalf of 10 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

     At the Tribunal's hearing today, the four defendants, namely Cheng Ho Ming, Cheung Ka Kui Francis trading as SAC Design & Model Making, Lam Ngaih Kaai formerly trading as Fantasy Beauty Centre, and Benpat International Limited, did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $34,836.66, $12,951.25, $6,913.72 and $473 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amounts awarded at the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay the costs of $930. The Tribunal ordered the defendants to pay $200, $99, $109 and $66 respectively as the costs of the claims.
