As a tribute to Mr Luk Wan-fung, a genuine film enthusiast and founder of Yunfeng Film Company, Hong Kong Film Archive's (HKFA) "Morning Matinee" next month will feature two celebrated Yunfeng Cantonese films to mark the centenary of Uncle Luk's birth.
Yunfeng's debut film, "Troublous Wives and Husband" (1954) and the comedy "Who Will Get the Pretty Girl" (1955) will be screened at 11am on December 3 and 17 respectively at the Cinema of the HKFA. Both films are in Cantonese without English subtitles.
Education is no guarantee of a life on easy street but hard work and resilience promise improvement. Starring opera superstar Sun Ma Si-tsang and Tang Bik-wan, "Troublous Wives and Husband" uses harsh life circumstances as the foundation of its drama, yet it manages to rise above bleakness to deliver a work of fun and charm.
Who will win the tender love of opera diva Pak Suet-sin - the painter or the musician? Plenty of drama and comedy are squeezed into "Who will get the Pretty Girl?" One high point is a spectacle at the beach when Sun Ma Si-tsang displays his never-photographed pencil-thin physique! In contrast, Pak Suet-sin is given ample opportunity to parade the chicest of fashions, her style and the confidence it projects embodying the chutzpah of the "new woman" emerging from mid-20th century Hong Kong.
"Morning Matinee" showcases selected films on the Fridays of the first and the third weeks of each month.
Tickets priced at $20 for the two films are available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
