Youth Summit 2010

     The Home Affairs Bureau and the Commission on Youth (COY) will jointly hold the Youth Summit 2010 on Saturday (March 6) to provide a platform for more than 600 young people to exchange views on issues of concern to them as well as share their views with government officials, youth workers and other participants. The summit will be broadcast on the Internet.

     To expand the network of young people participating in the youth summit, the COY has invited 18 youth organisations to assist in  organising this year's event. The 40 youth representatives nominated by various organisations have been actively preparing for the youth summit in recent months, including taking part in a seminar on January 30 to study and discuss with 400 young people the theme and discussion topics of the youth summit.

     The theme of this year's youth summit is "Building the Future - Challenges and Opportunities for Youth". There will be four discussion topics for young people to express their views on matters of concern with other participants and guests. The topics are: "Challenges Arising from Demographic Changes", "Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development", "Healthy Life, Healthy Mind" and "Versatility and Collaboration in Culture and Technology".

     The Acting Chief Executive, Mr Henry Tang, will attend the youth summit to have an exchange with youth representatives as well as to answer questions raised by participants and the online audience.

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kenneth Chen, Under Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Gabriel Leung, and Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, will also attend the summit to have exchanges with the young people. Also attending and sharing their experiences with the youths will be renowned athlete Dr Li Ning, pianist Miss Colleen Lee, indoor cycling athlete Mr Yu Sum-yee and 2009 Outstanding Young Person Mr Stanley Cheung.

     The youth summit will be held in the morning and afternoon on Saturday at Y-Theatre, Youth Square, 238 Chai Wan Road. The Acting Chief Executive will also officiate at the opening ceremony of Youth Square.

     The 18 youth organisations assisting in the organisation of the event include district youth groups, non-governmental youth organisations and uniformed groups. Young people from various tertiary institutions and social services organisations all have a chance to participate in the event. (List of assisting organisations is at Annex)
