***********************************************

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue, visited Yau Tsim Mong District this afternoon (June 5) to see for herself the hustle and bustle of this vibrant district.

Accompanied by the District Officer (Yau Tsim Mong), Mrs Vicki Kwok, Miss Yue first arrived at Jade Street in Canton Road, which has a landmark made of real jade built on the street. She stopped by one of the retail shops and chatted with the owner about how the jade business was affected by the current economic downturn.

Miss Yue then proceeded to the Jordan Road Government Primary School, which takes in non-Chinese speaking students and newly arrived children from the Mainland.

During her tour of the 50-year-old primary school, she watched students attending language classes and extra-curricular activities.  Miss Yue said she was pleased to learn that students with different cultural backgrounds were receiving quality holistic education. Miss Yue also called on a cooking class organised by the Parent-Teacher Association.

Miss Yue's next stop was the Man Cheong Street Community Garden which was opened in 2007 to help promote public awareness of greening and environmental protection. She noted that the community garden had launched a popular programme during which participants can acquire gardening skills and learn to become a city farmer by planting their own plots within a period of four months.

Miss Yue also visited the Yau Tsim Mong Pet Garden where lawns and sitting-out areas were provided for pet lovers to spend time outdoor with their pets.

Before ending her visit, Miss Yue went to the Henry G. Leong Yaumatei Community Centre and met with the chairman and members of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council for an exchange of views on various district issues.
