Three employers ordered to pay MPF non-payments

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (January 15) obtained two orders in the District Court against two employers for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at about $350,000. The MPFA also pursued one claim in the Small Claims Tribunal for about $15,000 on behalf of two employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employer.

     The District Court today issued judgments against Hanley Watch Case Manufactory Limited and Express-Mail Transportation International Company Limited. The defendants were ordered to pay the MPFA $290,125.59 and $64,120.50, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to nine and four employees of the defendants respectively.

     At the tribunal's hearing, Chan Choi Hing formerly trading as Ka Yiu Knitting, did not dispute the amount claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $15,502.30, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amounts awarded at the District Court and the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendants each to pay costs of $930. The tribunal ordered the defendant to pay costs of $170.
