The enthusiasm for the Olympic Games was rekindled as Mainland Olympic gold medallists today (August 30) made their appearances at the Meet-the-Public cum Sports Demonstrations, and the grace and prowess of their performances deeply impressed Hong Kong people.
The Mainland athletes, who had won their gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, displayed their superb skills again this morning, and Hong Kong people were honoured to have even closer contact with them.
As part of their visit to Hong Kong, the delegation of Mainland Olympic gold medallists put on demonstrations of table tennis at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre in Sham Shui Po, badminton at Kowloon Park Sports Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, diving at Shing Mun Valley Swimming Pool in Tsuen Wan, and gymnastics at Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai.
More than 5,000 people watched the impressive demonstrations at the four venues of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, while tens of thousands of viewers watched the TV live broadcasts at home.
Besides sports demonstrations, the gold medallists had friendly exchanges with young Hong Kong athletes while some of the participants selected by drawing lots shared the fun by taking part in table tennis, badminton and gymnastics with the medallists.
The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang; the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang; the Financial Secretary; Mr John C Tsang and the Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC and senior government officials had respectively visited the demonstrations and greeted members of the delegation.
