In 2008, The King's Singers (UK) celebrate 40 years of making music and the ensemble will give a concert in Hong Kong to show their musicality.
Performing at the concert will be counter-tenors David Hurley and Robin Tyson, tenor Paul Phoenix, baritones Philip Lawson and Christopher Gabbitas, as well as bass Stephen Connolly. The programme includes Celtic sounds "Mairi's Wedding", "Danny Boy"; jazz numbers "Lazy Bones", "Blue Skies"; Suite from the "Jungle Book"; Broadway musicals "All I Ask of You" (from "Phantom of the Opera"), "Memory" (from "Cats") and many more.
In the past 40 years, The King's Singers have performed in more than 100 concerts every season, in addition to recording and teaching. They delight audiences around the world with their incomparable musicianship, charm and wit. With their recently released album "Landscape and Time" described as possessing "singing of rare distinction" and "stunningly high musical standards", they have maintained their place at the apex of a cappella singing, and are counted among the world's elite classical performers.
The King's Singers' repertoire is all encompassing, from medieval music to masterpieces of the Renaissance, from lieder to folk, pop and jazz. With contemporary commissions from leading composers, they are constantly expanding their repertoire. Since their debut concert in 1968 they have commissioned works from many well-known composers, including Krystof Penderecki, Luciano Berio, Peter Maxwell Davies, Richard Rodney Bennett and Gyorgy Ligeti. With a dozen such commissions since 2000, the latest works will come from John McCabe, Eric Whitacre, Michael Nyman and Jay Greenberg.
The group has also teamed up with distinguished soloists like soprano Kiri Te Kanawa, pianist Emanuel Ax, jazz pianist George Shearing, percussionist Evelyn Glennie, and even Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys.
But above all, it is their simple enjoyment of what they do that has captured the imagination of the public all over the world. As the Times of London put it, they are "still unmatched for their musicality and sheer ability to entertain."
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the concert by The King's Singers will be staged at 8pm, June 15 (Sunday), in the Concert Hall at the Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets prices range from $380, $300, $200 to $120.
A workshop by The King's Singers will be held at 7.30pm, June 16 (Monday), in Room CR2, 7/F, Backstage of the Concert Hall at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets price at $80.
Tickets are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions will be granted to senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
