The Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC, visited the Yuen Long district today (March 4) and attended a meeting of the Yuen Long District Fight Crime Committee (YLDFCC) to learn more about the district's crime situation.

Mr Wong briefed members of the DFCC on the work progress of the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse at the meeting. He said the Task Force had had in-depth discussions on the problem over the past few months and devised a series of measures that could be implemented in the short to medium term. It would also map out long-term strategies in the months to come.

The Financial Secretary has allocated $53 million in his recent Budget for implementing these measures which cover education and publicity, treatment and rehabilitation as well as law enforcement.

At today's DFCC meeting, Mr Wong listened to views and proposals from members in combatting youth drug abuse. He also noted that the YLDFCC had recently been organising a series of activities to promote the fight crime message.

He then visited the ELCHK Tin Shui Wai Integrated Youth Service Centre where he was briefed on the wide range of social services provided for the community. Funded by the Social Welfare Department, the Centre has set up a team of volunteers to reach out to young people hanging out in entertainment venues or housing estates in the district at night, unwilling to go home. The team also works closely with the Police and provides counselling service to young people being cautioned under the Police Superintendent Discretion's Scheme.
