The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (December 20) the December 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Hong Kong as a Knowledge-based Economy", "Hong Kong Labour Force Projections for 2007 to 2026" and "The Mortality Trend in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2006" are included.

"Hong Kong as a Knowledge-based Economy"

Many advanced economies have undergone significant changes in recent years.  One of the key characteristics of the changes is the growing importance of knowledge in all sectors of economic activities.  The incorporation of information and knowledge into economic activities is inducing profound structural and qualitative changes in the way an economy operates.

This feature article aims at portraiting the development of Hong Kong in the past decade from different perspectives of a knowledge-based economy (KBE) by presenting some relevant statistical indicators which capture the essence of a KBE.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Science and Technology Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel: 2887 5138).

"Hong Kong Labour Force Projections for 2007 to 2026"

The size and the composition of the labour force (LF) within the population are important determinants of economic development.  The C&SD has compiled a new set of LF projections covering the period 2007 to 2026, which provides information on the projected labour supply in Hong Kong and its sex and age distributions during 2007 to 2026.  Such information serves as useful reference for policy planning and formulation.

In compiling the LF projections for the period 2007 to 2026, reference has been made to (i) the 2006-based population projections and (ii) the trends of the sex-age specific labour force participation rates (LFPRs).  This feature article briefly describes the projection method and presents the projection results.

For enquiries about this article, please call the General Household Survey Section (2), C&SD (Tel: 2887 5506).

"The Mortality Trend in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2006"

With the availability of the results of the 2006 Population By-census, the population estimates since 2001, together with other statistics which in the process of their compilation involve the use of population estimates, have been updated.  This feature article presents the revised mortality data series and gives a brief account of the mortality trend in Hong Kong over the period from 1981 to 2006.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Demographic Statistics Section, C&SD (Tel: 2716 8044).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
