Shallow zone created in Yuen Long main pool for swimmers (with photos)
*********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department today (December 17) launched a trial scheme to provide a shallow zone in the first lane of Yuen Long Swimming Pool's heated main pool by erecting a temporary platform so that there are various water depths to meet the different needs of swimmers.

Yuen Long Swimming Pool only opens its heated main pool to swimmers in the winter months (November to March) while closing the non-heated pools, such as the training and secondary pools.

To meet the different needs of winter swimmers, the department introduced a shallow zone on trial basis by installing a temporary platform in the first lane of the heated main pool, thus reducing the water depth to 1.1 metres.

A railing has been erected along the edge of the lane to segregate swimmers. Also, swimming aids can be used in the shallow zone of the main pool.

The trial will run from today to March 31, 2008, after which the department will evaluate the results and decide whether the scheme should be extended to other swimming pools with a similar demand.

Yuen Long Swimming Pool, at 10 Tai Yuk Road, opens daily. The first session is from 6.30am to noon, the second session from 1pm to 6pm and the third session from 7pm to 9.30pm.
