Thirty-five inmates of Pik Uk Correctional Institution (PUCI) were presented with academic certificates at a ceremony today (December 12) in recognition of their achievements.

They obtained a total of 79 certificates in public examinations and one inmate has been admitted by a local university with 1A and 2Bs in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination.

Presenting certificates to the inmates, the Chairman of The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon, Mr Wong Siu-sang said, "With the opportunities given, the inmates have proven capable of attaining good academic results, and accomplishments in career in the future."

He encouraged the inmates to pursue knowledge and face challenges with perseverance in the process of study, and contribute to society after release.

Mr Wong also paid tribute to teachers and staff of PUCI.  He said, "They carried through the belief of 'education without prejudice' and prepared the youths to lead a fruitful life."

Chun Chai, one of the youths awarded certificates in the ceremony, has been released, and admitted by a local university after obtaining 1A and 2Bs in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination.  He returned to the institution today to share his process of rehabilitation and give encouragement to fellow inmates.  He said support from family and friends had given him the strength to turn over a new leaf.  He also expressed his gratitude to teachers and staff in the institution, and volunteers from outside organisations, adding that their continuous guidance and support were the source of his determination to lead a new life.
