Man jailed for assaulting public officer
****************************************

A man charged with assaulting a public officer appeared in Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts today (May 16) and was jailed for three months and ordered to pay $1,000 compensation to the victim.

The man, who dropped a cigarette butt in Nelson Street, Mong Kok, on March 15, refused to co-operate and assaulted a Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officer after being stopped and asked for personal particulars for completion of the fixed penalty notice. He was arrested with Police assistance.

A department spokesman reminded people to observe public hygiene regulations.

"Littering offenders should co-operate with law-enforcement officers who are empowered to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for violation of public hygiene laws," he said.

"Resorting to violence to avoid penalty is not only wrong, but it also carries serious legal consequences."
