More than 30 nostalgic toys, designed, manufactured or sold in Hong Kong over the years, are now on display at the "Hong Kong Toys" exhibition at the arttube of MTR Central Station until July 2.
The toy industry in Hong Kong has undergone tremendous changes. Since the 1980s, many manufacturers have moved their plants to the Mainland and toys rarely carry the words "Made in Hong Kong". The exhibits represent toy trends from different periods and many of them were highly popular at the time of their manufacture.
The exhibition is divided into six parts: "Western and Folk Toys: Late Qing to Early Republican Period", "Dolls and Cookery Sets: 1930s", "The Post-War Period: 1940s to 1950s", "Made in the British Colony of Hong Kong: 1960s", "The Toy Kingdom: 1970s", and "The Electronic World: 1980s to 1990s".
This is one of the exhibition series of "Beyond the Museum" organised by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the MTR Corporation. By staging a series of exhibitions in Central - the heart of the city - the project aims to provide the public with a new experience of art and culture.
The "Beyond the Museum" exhibition series consists of four specific themes. Apart from the current exhibition and the "Advertising Posters of Hong Kong in the 1920s & 1930s" exhibition in February, there will be two upcoming exhibitions - The "Fashion Parade ¡ª Women's Wears in Changing Hong Kong" to be held in July and "Contemporary Posters" in October.
The arttube is located on the Mezzanine floor near Entrance/Exit J of MTR Central Station. Admission is free.
