Applications invited for columbarium niches
*******************************************

Cheung Chau residents are invited to submit applications for the 1,026 newly built niches in the Columbarium of Cheung Chau Crematorium of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department from tomorrow (May 15) to June 4.

These niches are allocated only to eligible Cheung Chau residents. The deceased must be certified by the Cheung Chau Rural Committee as a local indigenous villager, or a bona fide resident living on Cheung Chau continuously for not less than 10 years, or an offspring of local residents.

The charges for each standard and large niche are $3,000 and $4,000 respectively, while placing of a memorial plaque is $295.

Application forms are available at the department offices in Cheung Chau and Sham Shui Po. They can also be obtained through fax or downloaded from the department's website (www.fehd.gov.hk).

Applicants can submit the completed application forms, together with the required documents, in person during office hours, or by mail or fax. Late applications will not be accepted.

An open ballot by computer will be held on June 14 to determine the applicants' selection priorities. If the number of applications exceeds the number of niches to be allocated, the first 1,026 applicants selected through the open ballot will be invited to select niches according to the appointed date and time. The ballot results will be posted at the office in Cheung Chau as well as on the department's website.

If the number of applications is fewer than the niche availability, the remaining stock will be open for another round of application starting from June 6 on a first-come-first-served basis. The public can check the latest situation with the following offices or browse the department's website on June 5.
