Turbot fish test results released
*********************************

A turbot fish sample collected at a market stall was found to contain a trace amount of nitrofurans, but free from malachite green and chloramphenicol.

The fish sample was collected by the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) at a regular inspection in the Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market.

"The level of nitrofurans detected was 0.034 ppm. Based on the detected level, normal consumption would not pose adverse health effects," a CFS spokesman said today (March 1).

"The stall owner has been asked to stop selling the turbot fish in question. The CFS will consider taking out prosecution.

"The Centre is following up on the source of fish supply."

The spokesman also advised local traders to suspend importing or selling turbot fish. He said the CFS would continue to make inspections and closely monitor the situation.
